Recycling Center

Nobody likes to take the trash out, but it's a job that's got to be done, and maybe that's part of what makes Union County great. We take pride in taking care of the jobs that have to be done.

A couple of years ago, we brought you the story of how SPLOST has funded several pieces of equipment that help Union County become the regional hub for recycling and waste management. But since then, SPLOST has funded a few more pieces of equipment like this baler. It helps a lot to fund the operation. It actually provides quite a bit of money throughout the year to do just this up here.

Yeah, it saved the county a lot more money. We wasn't having to take stuff before because we didn't have no place to dump our off-sorts. So now we can dump them here and bale everything here and make the county more money for other things. It's more efficient where you can run a bale of paper about every three minutes and you don't have to have as much manpower to run this machine.

And selling these bales allows the facility not to have to rely solely on taxpayer dollars to fund the operation, yet another example of how SPLOST keeps property taxes low. Yeah, well, without SPLOST you can't do a lot of the county projects you need to be doing. It saves the county taxpayers money and plus everybody all benefits from it.

And it's not just the baler, one of the most popular services at the Recycling Center is the paper shredder. We got a shredder. We do shredding every day. Plus, it saves the county money from not having to pay them to come up here and we own the shredder.

And thanks to this SPLOST investment, Union County actually helps fund our Recycling Center by working with surrounding counties, providing services that they're not equipped to provide. Yeah, we're taking glass from Towns County and glass, plastics, and cardboard from Cherokee, North Carolina. The more volume we got coming through, baling, the more profit Union County makes.

Less waste, more recycling. That kind of efficiency just feels good. And thanks to SPLOST, our Recycling Center does it better than anybody in this part of the world.
